Jesus Christ. It's a name we hear a lot in today's world. But Jesus Christ is more than a phrase one yells after hitting their finger with a hammer. It's the name of someone who walked this world 2000 years ago and whose life (and death) has changed the world forever...

Who was Jesus Christ really? What did he do? And why does it matter for you today?

Let's start at the very beginning...

Christians believe that God is the king and ruler of the world because he designed and created it to be good. He made people and gave us the responsibility of looking after the earth under his leadership, while enjoying the good things he has given us. God wanted to know each of us personally and for us to live happily together as his people. It sounds rather "perfect", doesn't it? But sadly, the world isn't like this today.

The sad truth is that all people have rejected God by wanting to do things our own way. We all struggle with stuff, ignore God and disobey him. We all do this – it's part of being human. This attitude of people doing our own thing rather than listening to God is what the Bible calls "sin". This saddens God and separates us from him. But just like a parent who cares about his children enough to acknowledge when they do something wrong, God cares about us enough to take our sin seriously. He is a fair God and he judges his people fairly. The consequence of sin and of living a life without God is that we will die and remain separated from him forever. And that's not easy to think about sometimes, is it? It sounds horrible.

But the story doesn't end here.

The good news is that because God loved us, he did not give up on his creation but did something to save us. He sent his son, Jesus, into the world to become a man. As Jesus walked on this earth, he taught God's love, performed miracles, experienced the sorrow of this world and showed us that God cares for everyone regardless of what we have done. Unlike us, Jesus was sinless and didn't deserve the punishment of death. But he allowed himself to die on a cross to take the punishment for our sin. What's more, he did not stay dead but three days later rose again – defeating death. Why? Because by dying in our place, we are made "sinless" in the eyes of God and can experience His forgiveness and mercy. Though we have done nothing to deserve this, by accepting the gift of Jesus' death and resurrection, we can be rescued from the punishment of sin, reconciled with our creator, become adopted as part of God's family and have eternal life.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only son, so that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16)

Every person will make a choice. We can choose to ignore God's gift of forgiveness and continue to live our life without God – or we can choose to admit we mess up and need Christ to save us, for we cannot save ourselves. Simply by believing that Jesus is Lord and asking him to forgive your sins, God will accept Jesus' death in your place and you can be welcomed as part of God's family and be adopted as one of his children. It doesn't matter what bad stuff you have done, you can be forgiven and start on a new journey of getting to know God better, living your life in a way that pleases him. Being a Christian does not mean that life will be perfect. Sometimes the journey will be easy and sometimes it will be hard, but no matter what you face in life, God will be with you every step of the way.

"Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9)
